You must be an EU or Associated Country SME, startup, or research organisation building directly on results from a specific list of eligible prior EU-funded projects.

Your proposal must be rooted in results from an EIC Pathfinder, ERC Proof of Concept, Horizon 2020/Europe R&I Action, or European Defence Fund project at TRL 3 completed or TRL 4. Large companies that do not qualify as SMEs cannot apply as a single entity.

YOUR REAL ODDS

The 2026 total budget is €100M across all EIC Transition funding, with grants up to €2.5M each, meaning roughly 40 or fewer projects will be funded.

Selection involves two rounds — written evaluation then a jury interview — so competition is real. Only proposals that pass the first stage are invited to interview, and not all interviewed projects receive funding.

WHAT IT TAKES

  1. Confirm eligibility: verify your prior EU project appears on the 2026 list of eligible projects and your results are at TRL 3 completed or TRL 4 — 1-3 days

  2. Write and submit a proposal of up to 22 A4 pages via the Funding and Tenders Opportunities Portal before the September 16, 2026 deadline — 4-8 weeks

  3. Remote evaluation by EIC expert evaluators; if passed, prepare for an online jury interview held approximately 11-13 weeks after the deadline — 3-4 months after submission

WORTH KNOWING

Proposals that meet all evaluation criteria thresholds at the first step but are not selected for funding receive a Seal of Excellence, which can support alternative fundraising efforts — so a strong application has value even if it does not win.
