You must be a Native artist nominated by another person — self-nominations are not accepted.

Nominees must be enrolled in or able to prove lineal descendancy from a federally or state-recognized US tribe, or be Alaska Native or Native Hawaiian, be a US resident, and have been actively practicing their Native art or cultural tradition for at least 10 years with a history of sharing it with their community.

YOUR REAL ODDS

Only 4 to 6 artists are honored each year out of a national pool of nominees.

Competition is significant given the award's prestige and size. The process is two-stage: nominations are screened first, and only selected nominees are invited to submit a full application.

WHAT IT TAKES

  1. Identify a nominator (or nominate someone): anyone — student, mentee, colleague, tribal member — can submit a nomination form describing the artist's community contributions — 1–2 hours

  2. Submit nomination via the online form during the open window — During the nomination window

  3. If selected, nominator and artist collaborate to complete the full Submittable application — Several hours

WORTH KNOWING

The nominator is explicitly encouraged to work collaboratively with the artist on the full application, so a strong nominator who knows the artist's work well and can articulate community impact is a meaningful advantage.
