CAN YOU GET THIS?

You must be a photographer physically based in the community whose environmental story you want to tell.

Vital Impacts explicitly rules out photographers applying from outside the community or country they plan to document. One $20,000 grant targets established photographers; six $5,000 grants target emerging photographers globally.

YOUR REAL ODDS

Seven grants are awarded per cycle to photographers worldwide, making this highly competitive.

The program is global with no geographic restriction beyond the community-embeddedness rule, so the applicant pool is large. A separate mentorship track selects ten additional emerging photographers who receive no cash grant but get year-long industry guidance.

WHAT IT TAKES

  1. Confirm eligibility: you live inside the community you plan to document and can sign Vital Impacts' Code of Ethics and Grant Agreement — 1 hour

  2. Develop a project proposal for a long-term documentary photography project focused on an environmental or conservation story in your community — 1–2 weeks

  3. Submit application via Picter in English or your native language (translation is provided) — 1–2 hours

WORTH KNOWING

Vital Impacts explicitly favors photographers who already have long-term relationships with the stakeholders in their chosen issue — a finished or ongoing project with community ties will outperform a cold pitch.
